Looking for a more exotic dining experience than Chik-Fil-A or Dominos? The family-owned Sakyo Restaurant on Okeechobee Boulevard. serves up delicious and authentic Vietnamese and Japanese dishes.

The restaurant opened in December of 2007 and was named “Best Palm Beach Vietnamese Restaurant” for 2008. While Sakyo is tucked away in a strip mall behind Babies R Us, once inside you are greeted by sophisticated Asian style. Sushi is prepared in front of you at the bar, and the music is an adult contemporary mix.

All of our menu choices arrived piping hot with the ingredients tasting fresh and flavorful. I ordered the Yakitori chicken appetizer and a small salmon roll. The chicken was grilled, savory, and served on bamboo skewers while the salmon roll was much larger than most small rolls at sushi restaurants. The entire meal only set me back about nine bucks.

My more adventurous companion ordered the golden roll ($10), made with baby octopus, and a crab sushi piece ($1.95) a la carte. The golden roll was fried and crunchy on the outside, while soft and tender on the inside. Our other dining companion had the seafood tempura ($20) which was enormous, definitely more than a single portion. It consisted of crab, shrimp, fish and an assortment of vegetables. To add to the value, it also came with a ginger salad, soup and rice.

We also shared a pork roll and a soft roll. The former came with three small rolls wrapped in crispy noodles and filled with carrots and shredded pork.

The spring roll was wrapped in transparent rice paper and stuffed with lettuce, cucumber, mint, shrimp, and pork. Served with a house specialty sauce made with espresso, it tasted fresh and cleansing- a great way to end the meal.

Service is quick and attentive; our servers were more than happy to answer questions about the menu and ingredients. With large portions and extremely reasonable prices, Sakyo provides a great ethnic dining option for budget-minded students. Students can also receive 10 percent off their meal with an online coupon available at
